Theres a saying that rocks shouldn't be removed from where you find them, that they belong to the land where they are found and to take them away is to disrupt the sacred dreaming of Earth, their spirits will be disconnected from their kin and the stories of the world and this place they hold will be become fragmented and lost. This is true, but not for all rocks.
While massive boulders bigger than skyscrapers that make up parts of the mountians and gorges may never move from the location on Earth they inhabit, anchoring resonance and the scaredness of time eternal in those places, some rocks are destined to travel the world. Whether by flooding, earthquakes, or falling in love with a human, rock beings are unexpected explorers finding themselves in some most unanticipated and unforeseen spots. From deep inner city lofts with views of an urban jungle, backyard gardens or wedged between a tree and a waterfall, wondering if the next wet season will finally dislodge you from this position and push you over the edge and on your way, Rocks really do get around.
One chilly morning in July 2025 my husband and I woke before dawn to walk down to the beach to greet the Sun on the east side of the beautiful Long Island. Long Island is part of the Cumberland Island Group in the Whitsundays just 25 minutes by boat from Airlie Beach.
What unfolded before us was one of the most stunning Rock Beaches I have ever seen. No sand just a whole beach made up the most beautiful rounded polished rocks I have ever seen. The energy was phenomenal, I have never felt a gathering of rocks so estatically happy and I remember thinking, yes this is definitely a beautiful place to live, so I can understand the hype, but there was something else about it, a deeper reason that I hadn't grasped - yet.
It was winter and there was a slight breeze so we decided to wait till the sun came up before we got it.
As the sun began to stretch up over the horizon, sending the first golden rays across the sea to meet us where we sat at the waters edge, the whole beach began to hum, and vibrate and sing. When the sunlight reached the rocks and began to rise up over them, they became alive in a way I had never imagioneda rock could be. Golden light was being reflected off all of them, in every direction, there was a whole moment, about 30 seconds where the sun was at just the right angle where it was touching everyone of them at once, it came from the sea, and from the sky, the rocks, the sun and the sea were in dic=vone communion and we were blessed to be sitting right in the middel of it - it was both divinely silent and absoutly alive with the sound of the water, stones and sun rejoying to be together. The whole beach lit up with sunlight rocks , it was one of those moments you wonder if your still on Earth- and then you remember yes - of course you are because Earth is the jump off to all the other the other realms.
After the moment had passed the rocks beside me told me, that Rocks from all over the world want to come here to experience that moment. They set off from their homes en route to this very place, it is the dream of a lifetime to make it here, timeless eons pass sometimes, and then there are those who are lucky to catch the right ocean currents and arrive sooner.
The Rocks of Long Island are very very sacred to this place, it was a no brainer not to take one after them spending their whole lives thus far to make it here - it would be very sad to take them away.
